Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is an artificial insemination technique chiefly used to treat infertility. With the help of a thin tube (catheter), washed and concentrated sperms are placed directly into the uterus during ovulation. Sperms washing refers to separating sperms from the seminal fluid, chemicals and cellular debris. This increases sperm concentration per volume.

During a natural conception, sperms drift from the vagina to the cervix, then into the uterus and fallopian tubes. Only 5% of the sperm make it to the uterus. Eggs released from the ovary reach the fallopian tubes, and fertilisation occurs here. IUI removes the time to reach the uterus by directly placing sperm into it, and increasing the chances of fertilisation.
